Meta Platforms Inc. said Friday it has acquired Limitless, an artificial intelligence (AI)-wearables startup that produces a pendant device capable of recording and transcribing conversations — the social media company’s latest move to expand its consumer hardware offerings and take on rival Apple Inc.

The acquisition comes as Meta intensifies its focus on AI-enabled devices. Limitless CEO Dan Siroker said the deal aligns with both companies’ vision for “personal superintelligence.”

“Meta recently announced a new vision to bring personal superintelligence to everyone and a key part of that vision is building incredible AI-enabled wearables,” Siroker wrote in a blog post. “We share this vision and we’ll be joining Meta to help bring our shared vision to life.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The accord follows Meta’s hiring earlier this week of Alan Dye, a veteran Apple design executive, signaling the company’s commitment to developing next-generation hardware. Meta plans to leverage Limitless’ technology as it builds out its portfolio of AI-powered wearables.

Meta currently partners with EssilorLuxottica brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to manufacture AI-enabled smart glasses.

“We’re excited that Limitless will be joining Meta to help accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables,” a Meta spokesperson told Reuters.

Limitless, previously known as Rewind, manufactures a clip-on pendant that records conversations and generates searchable transcripts through a companion app. The device represents part of an emerging market for AI assistants designed to enhance memory and productivity.

Following the acquisition, Limitless said it will discontinue sales to new customers while continuing to support existing users, who will be required to accept updated privacy terms. The company has raised more than $33 million from investors that include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
