Microsoft Corp., Citigroup Inc., Thomson Reuters Corp., The Travelers Companies, Inc., and other sizeable corporations that have integrated large language models such as GPT-4 into their workflow are increasingly seeking skilled individuals to help implement, train and oversee their AI, according to a report by GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
“GPT-4 has been generating buzz online ever since its launch,” said Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData. “Recently OpenAI launched GPT-4 Turbo. Microsoft is partnering with OpenAI to introduce the next generation of language and multi-modal models using generative language like GPT-4 and ChatGPT,” she said.
A research survey published Oct. 9, 2023, by the University of Oxford reveals that the demand for such skilled workers has risen dramatically across the globe.
“Over the past decade, automation technologies have been a key driver of change in the labour market,” said Dr Pantelis Koutroumpis, Director of the Oxford Martin Programme on Technological and Economic Change. “There has been a huge increase in the demand for AI skills, which has led to different recruitment processes, different job titles and different job specifications. As work becomes increasingly automated, detailed skills requirements now form the basis of recruitment, rather than criteria for education and experience. Meanwhile, new occupations are appearing, requiring different, novel skillsets.”
Generally, such positions at companies like Microsoft, and the Travelers require at least a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related degree, and years of experience, but there are postings across sectors that, while they require a high-level of expertise, do not list a degree as a requirement.
Dr. Koutroumpis said that since 2015, there has been a five-fold increase in the demand for AI-related skills as a percent of US jobs. “Globally, AI jobs grew nine times for Tech-AI jobs and 11.3 times for Broad-AI ones while IT sector jobs rose 3.7 times and the number of total jobs advertised grew 2.7 times,” he said.
The new position at Microsoft includes the description of tasks for a Skype Senior Software Engineer, “Our team is also working on AI integrations into Skype, such as Bing Chat, a conversational agent powered by GPT-4 that can chat with users on various topics, and news filtering, a feature that uses AI to personalize and curate relevant news articles for users based on their interests and preferences.”
Citigroup Inc. is seeking a Generative AI Full Stack Engineering Lead – Codified Controls. “In this role you will be responsible for driving and contributing to the technical direction of our products and services, instilling engineering best practices into the team, and promoting cultural change across the organization. You will also work with Generative AI technologies, such as GPT-4, embedding their capabilities through prompt engineering in our systems.”
Thomson Reuters is seeking a Sr. Sales Specialist – MLF Growth Team. Their job posting included the description of responsibility and tasks: “Document Intelligence from Thomson Reuters is a new acquisition that makes analyzing contracts and documents easy by leveraging the power of A.I. and the expertise of Practical Law. Additionally, this role will be responsible for driving net new growth selling CoCounsel, which is our newest acquisition and the world’s first reliable A.I. Legal Assistant powered by GPT-4.”
Thomson Reuters has gone in heavy with AI, as would be expected of a company that does audit and accounting and dozens of other tax-related services, in addition to publishing across a broad range of media. On November 9, 2023, the company unveiled “new AI and automation tax product capabilities to drive efficiency for firms and multinationals.
Piritta van Rijn, the Head of Accounting, Tax & Practice for Thomson Reuters, said, “Tax industry professionals struggle with the increased pace of regulatory change and hiring challenges. We are excited to bring new product capabilities to customers utilizing AI to automate tax preparation so they can focus on what matters – serving clients, growing their practices and creating better workplaces. We’re also unveiling enhancements that will support auditors with automated detection of anomalies in audits. This will not only save auditors time, but it will elevate confidence in results, and reduce risk for firms.”
The Travelers Companies Inc. is seeking a Senior Data Engineer with “Experience on Python with the more recent large language models (GPT-4, Stable Diffusion models, others, other more focused language models). Additionally, the position requires being ‘Up-to-date with the latest research in machine learning and natural language processing, especially large language models and dialog systems.’” The job description continues, “Maintain awareness of and utilize where appropriate, state-of-the-art AI including Generative models as well as more classic NLP models, etc.”
The demand for skilled workers will be sustained, according to the GlobalData report. “As more companies adopt chatbots and other LLM AI technologies to improve customer service and operational efficiency, the need for talented individuals to develop, maintain and operate these systems is also increasing.”
