A wave of targeted violence linked to the burgeoning backlash against artificial intelligence (AI) has struck the doorsteps of industry leaders and local officials.

Within a week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco residence was targeted in two separate attacks — first with a Molotov cocktail, then with gunfire — while an Indianapolis councilman’s home was riddled with gunfire over a proposed data center.

The escalation began on Friday, when a 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s North Beach home, igniting a fire at the exterior gate. Authorities report that the suspect then moved to OpenAI’s headquarters, threatening to burn the building down.

According to a criminal complaint, the suspect’s motive was rooted in fears of AI’s “purported risk to humanity” and “impending extinction.” When arrested, Moreno-Gama was carrying a “manifesto” that detailed his anti-AI beliefs and listed the names of other AI executives, according to the complaint.

The violence at the Altman residence continued just two days later.

Early Sunday, police arrested Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, following a “possible shots fired” incident. Investigators believe a shot was fired from a vehicle registered to Tom as it passed Altman’s property. A subsequent search of a separate residence uncovered three firearms. While no injuries were reported in either San Francisco incident, the rapid succession of attacks has sent shockwaves through the tech community.

In a candid blog post addressing the hostility, Altman called for a “de-escalation of rhetoric.” Sharing a photo of his husband and child, he acknowledged that public anxiety is “justified” given the scale of societal change AI represents. However, he urged critics to pursue debate through dialogue rather than “explosions in homes, figuratively and literally.”

The unrest is not confined to Silicon Valley. In Indianapolis, City-County Councilmember Ron Gibson awoke Monday to find 13 bullet holes in his home and a note reading “No Data Centers” on his doorstep. Gibson had recently voiced support for a $500 million data center project in his district.

“Just steps from where those bullets struck is our dining room table, where my son had been playing,” Gibson said in a statement, condemning the act as a radicalized response to local development.

The incidents reflect a darkening public mood toward AI infrastructure. While tech giants Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and Google race to expand capacity, they are met with mounting resistance over noise, water consumption, and environmental “heat islands.”

A Silicon Valley consultant said she found it “chilling and disturbing” that AI was now “considered scary or threatening” to humans now after years of measured acceptance. She fears the animus could spread toward the employees of high-profile AI companies, who also might be targeted.

There is historic precedence for all this. The turn of the 20th century marked a volatile era of urban migration that fundamentally reshaped the global workforce, as a mass exodus from the countryside flooded industrial hubs in the United States and abroad, contributing to massive income disparity. The rapid transition forced former agricultural laborers into grueling, hazardous shifts within cramped textile and manufacturing plants, fueling a deep-seated resentment toward the wealthy industrialist class. When friction between exploited workers and factory titans reached a boiling point, societal upheaval birthed the modern labor movement and provided a fertile breeding ground for the radical political philosophies of Communism and anarchism.

One AI employee in Silicon Valley compared the venomous climate to the assassination of UnitedHealth Group Inc. CEO Brian Thompson in a premeditated attack on the streets of New York in 2024. “The balance of corporate power and greed against everyone is so out of whack,” the person said, requesting anonymity out of fear of losing their job. “And our government isn’t helping us, so people start taking matters into their own hands at some point.”

Heightened visibility of modern tech leaders may be fueling a growing backlash against the industry. New data from DeleteMe reveals that executives and public figures now harbor roughly 45% more personal data exposed than the average individual. With March 2026 figures showing high-profile targets averaging 545 personal data points compared to the standard 375, the intensifying debate over AI is increasingly blurring the line between legitimate public scrutiny and direct personal targeting, underscoring a deeper societal shift in sentiment that is transforming the architects of AI infrastructure into visible lightning rods for broader anxieties over the technology’s rapid expansion.

As state legislatures scramble to pass safety regulations and data center moratoriums, the physical safety of those at the forefront of the AI revolution has become a primary concern for law enforcement and federal agencies alike.

“This kind of attack is happening on a more condensed timeline,” said Michael Evanoff, global chief security officer and strategic advisor at Verkada, who has decades of experience protecting high-risk government officials and private sector leaders.

“Traditionally, the cycle from radicalization to ideation to action took days or months; now, it can happen in hours,” Evanoff said in an email. “These attacks are often emotionally charged and poorly planned, rather than being highly sophisticated operations. This seems like it was purely driven by frustration. It was not a well-planned-out attack.”

The attacks are unfolding as the public shows less trust in AI. Recent polling suggests only 26% of Americans hold a favorable view of AI, while 46% view it negatively.

At the same time, a 2026 Pew Research survey reveals nearly 40% of Americans now view data centers as environmental liabilities, frequently citing surging utility bills and noise pollution. In the mid-Atlantic, researchers found that data center energy demand accounted for a staggering $9.3 billion in regional price hikes, effectively forcing residents to subsidize big tech’s power needs.

The resistance is no longer just local protest; it is becoming law. Maine is currently pursuing a statewide moratorium, while in Memphis, Tenn., civil rights groups are suing over air quality concerns linked to massive gas turbine installations. As tech giants scramble to offer Ratepayer Protection Pledges, the message from communities is clear: they are tired of exporting their water and energy to power a digital world that offers little local return.

Between April and June 2025, $98 billion in data center projects were blocked or delayed by local resistance — representing roughly two-thirds of all tracked projects for that period, according to the World Economic Forum.
