Box Inc. and IBM Corp. on Tuesday said they are teaming to help organizations ramp up adoption of enterprise-level artificial intelligence (AI) for content-driven workflows through IBM watsonx and Box AI.

Box is also using IBM watsonx.governance internally for life-cycle management of AI models to monitor, govern and offer guardrails for regulations.

“The impact AI is having on the enterprise is unlike anything we’ve seen since the birth of the internet,” Box CEO Aaron Levie said in a statement announcing the partnership. “Traditionally, knowledge work has been constrained by the time it takes to research, create and review content — but AI changes that, accelerating these processes exponentially. By deepening our partnership with IBM and leveraging watsonx, we’re empowering enterprises to harness AI responsibly and at scale.”

Because most of an organization’s sensitive data is often unstructured and tangled within contracts, spreadsheets, presentations and other documents, it needs a trusted technology guide — in this case, AI — to navigate various systems and find data without compromising security and compliance, particularly in highly-regulated industries, according to IBM and Box.

“Organizations are seeking purpose-built AI solutions that empower their teams to make faster, data-driven decisions,” Rob Thomas, senior vice president, software and chief commercial officer, IBM, said in a statement. “Our partnership with Box enables businesses to seamlessly integrate AI into their core processes, helping to enhance productivity and transform operations.”

The IBM-Box partnership comes at a crucial time for IT decision makers within enterprises.

A flood of AI agents from the likes of ServiceNow Inc., Salesforce Inc., Microsoft Corp., Google and dozens of others has raised the stakes on managing all forms of data.

Indeed, unstructured data in the form of social posts, customer feedback, emails and images is of increasing concern, too. New research from Precisely found 60% of data and AI professionals are evaluating unstructured data, which agentic AI depends on to make autonomous decisions, and nearly one-third already observe these data in production.
