Meta Platforms Inc. has entered a massive, multi-year strategic partnership with NVIDIA Corp. to secure millions of high-end chips to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
The deal, reportedly worth tens of billions of dollars, cements Meta’s position as a dominant force in the global AI arms race and ensures the social media giant has the hardware necessary to develop what CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls “personal superintelligence.”
The collaboration centers on the large-scale rollout of NVIDIA’s next-generation Blackwell and Rubin GPUs across Meta’s global data center footprint, including sites in the U.S. and India.
Notably, the agreement includes the first significant standalone deployment of NVIDIA’s Arm-based Grace CPUs, which are designed to maximize energy efficiency, a critical factor as Meta scales its hyperscale data centers for AI training and inference.
Beyond raw processing power, the partnership integrates NVIDIA’s full technology stack into Meta’s ecosystem. Meta will deploy Spectrum-X Ethernet switches within its proprietary Facebook Open Switching System to manage networking. This integration aims to provide the low-latency, high-utilization connectivity required for modern AI workloads while reducing the massive power draw typical of such operations.
“Through deep co-design across CPUs, GPUs, networking, and software, we are bringing the full NVIDIA platform to Meta’s researchers,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. “They are building the foundation for the next AI frontier.”
A key pillar of the deal is the implementation of NVIDIA Confidential Computing. This technology will debut within WhatsApp to enable advanced AI features while maintaining strict user privacy. While end-to-end encryption protects data in transit, Confidential Computing ensures that data remains encrypted even while being processed in a remote cloud enclave.
Meta plans to expand this privacy-enhanced AI across its entire portfolio, potentially setting a new industry standard for how tech giants handle sensitive user information during complex AI computations.
The deal comes at a pivotal time for Meta. While the company is developing its own custom silicon, the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, there are reports that the project has faced technical hurdles and production delays. By doubling down on NVIDIA hardware, Meta ensures its AI roadmap remains on track regardless of internal chip development timelines.
The partnership also casts doubt on Meta’s previous plans to utilize Google’s Tensor chips, as a significant portion of Meta’s estimated $135 billion annual budget for its Superintelligence Labs is now likely earmarked for NVIDIA.
Looking ahead, the two companies are already co-designing for the future. Engineering teams are optimizing software for NVIDIA’s upcoming Vera CPUs, slated for 2027, ensuring that Meta’s infrastructure remains at the cutting edge of performance per watt for years to come.
