Google Cloud’s new set of artificial intelligence (AI) agents for data scientists and engineers, announced early this morning in Tokyo, are bringing smart co-workers to cloud apps and internet services.

The six new agents – designed to understand commands in natural language – will allow developers and executives to chat with the agents just as they would with ChatGPT and Gemini to improve workflows through the help of natural language. Additionally, Google Cloud launched a series of APIs, tools, and protocols as well as updates to unify data.

The Data Engineering Agent, for example, will automatically create documents and databases. A Data Science Agent can be used to extract data from Google Cloud databases.

Yasmeen Ahmad, managing director of data cloud at Google Cloud, described the era as an “agentic shift” … “where specialized AI agents work autonomously and cooperatively to unlock insights at a scale and speed that was previously unimaginable.”

Google Cloud’s latest offerings represent “specialized AI agents (that) work autonomously and cooperatively to unlock insights at a scale and speed” in a “single, unified, AI-native cloud” Ahmad said in a blog post.

A quick roundup of the other four new AI agents:

  • Conversational Analytics Agent + Code Interpreter: Chatbot-style tool that supports conversational question-and-answer dialogue using the context of unique data sets.
  • Migration Agent for Spanner: Data modernization agent for Google Cloud’s global database service, Spanner, that simplifies migration from legacy databases like MySQL to Spanner to eliminate hours of administrative work.
  • Conversational Analytics API: Custom agent builder for developers and businesses that understands questions in natural language about business specifics and can create reports that include charts to provide detailed analysis.
  • Gemini CLI GitHub Actions: Coding teammate for GitHub repository that can automatically pull requests, tests, reviews and implementation for developers.

“The true potential of the agentic shift is realized when developers not only use existing agents but also extend and connect them to their own intelligent systems, creating a broader network,” Ahmad said in the post. The new agents, he added, should help Google Cloud lower the barrier of entry to advanced data analytics, “eras[ing] the line between operational and analytical worlds.”
