Foreshadowing a potential new world order in the artificial intelligence (AI) power structure, OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser has identified the company’s burgeoning alliance with Amazon.com Inc. as the primary engine for its future enterprise growth.

The pivot comes alongside a pointed critique of OpenAI’s long-time backer, Microsoft Corp., suggesting that the foundational partnership has become a strategic bottleneck.

In a staff memo sent Sunday and obtained by CNBC, Dresser characterized demand for OpenAI’s integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as “staggering.” The memo arrives less than two months after Amazon announced a $50 billion investment in the AI pioneer, a deal that included providing OpenAI with two gigawatts of specialized Trainium computing capacity.

Since 2019, Microsoft has poured more than $13 billion into OpenAI, providing the essential cloud infrastructure that birthed ChatGPT. However, Dresser suggested that the exclusivity of that relationship is no longer sufficient for the current market.

“Our Microsoft partnership has been foundational to our success,” Dresser wrote. “But it has also limited our ability to meet enterprises where they are — for many, that’s Bedrock.”

AWS Bedrock is a platform that allows corporate clients to access various AI models. By expanding its presence there, OpenAI hopes to capture the vast segment of the market that remains loyal to Amazon’s cloud ecosystem.

“The bottleneck Dresser refers to is, of course, that Microsoft usually owns the customer relationship. AWS of course has a lot of customers but doesn’t have the same kind of wall-to-wall relationships Microsoft can have with large enterprises, given its software portfolio,” Nick Patience, vice president and AI practice lead for The Futurum Group, said. “For a long time, the narrative was that OpenAI needed Microsoft to survive. Dresser is flipping that – she is saying that for OpenAI to thrive as an independent enterprise power, they must stop being Microsoft’s most expensive feature and start being Amazon’s most valuable partner.”

The pivot follows signs of cooling relations between the two tech giants. Last year, Microsoft officially listed OpenAI as a competitor in its annual report, while OpenAI has increasingly sought compute power from Oracle Corp. and Google.

The enterprise sector has become the ultimate kingmaker for AI valuations. OpenAI, recently valued at $850 billion, is currently locked in a fierce rivalry with Anthropic.

By labeling the Microsoft partnership a bottleneck, HyperFRAME Research analyst Ron Westfall points out, OpenAI is asserting its independence to pursue the 60% of the enterprise market currently rooted in AWS and other cloud environments.

“I find that this shift reveals that business leaders are prioritizing cloud neutrality and the advanced stateful runtimes necessary for AI memory over the restrictive licensing of the original Microsoft deal,” Westfall said in an email. “As such, this $50 billion Amazon alliance transforms OpenAI into a sovereign platform provider, enabling it to commoditize infrastructure and pave its own way toward multi-cloud dominance.”

While OpenAI claims its enterprise business now accounts for 40% of its revenue, Anthropic has seen its own run-rate revenue leap from $9 billion to over $30 billion in mere months, a phenomenon that industry insiders have dubbed “Claude Mania.”

Dresser’s memo did not mince words regarding its competitor, alleging that Anthropic’s revenue figures are “inflated” by roughly $8 billion due to aggressive accounting practices. She further claimed Anthropic is suffering from a “strategic misstep” by failing to secure enough computing power, asserting that OpenAI’s development ramp is “materially ahead and widening.”

Beyond technical and financial disputes, Dresser framed the competition in ideological terms. She accused Anthropic of building a strategy rooted in “fear, restriction, and the idea that a small group of elites should control AI,” contrasting it with what she described as OpenAI’s “positive message.”

As both OpenAI and Anthropic reportedly eye initial public offerings (IPOs) as early as this year, the pressure to demonstrate sustainable corporate adoption is immense.

With Dresser overseeing the company’s commercial responsibilities, OpenAI’s message to its staff—and its investors—is clear: the market is theirs to win, provided they can successfully navigate the transition from a Microsoft-dependent startup to a multi-cloud enterprise powerhouse.
