Google announced sweeping upgrades to NotebookLM on Monday, transforming the experimental artificial intelligence (AI) note-taking app into a powerful, agentic research assistant.

Three years after its initial debut in Google Labs, the platform is receiving advanced reasoning capabilities, a built-in cloud computing environment, and expanded multi-format export options.

The updates, which are rolling out globally, are powered by Google’s next-generation Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity models. According to Google, this new architecture yields highly reliable information while offering users greater visibility into the AI’s step-by-step reasoning process.

In a significant technical leap, every notebook is now equipped with its own secure cloud computer. This allows NotebookLM to write and execute code natively, enabling users to perform complex data analysis directly within the platform. The system arrives pre-loaded with more than 100 curated software skills designed to help users synthesize large volumes of data.

Internal evaluations show the upgraded system drastically outperforms its predecessor. Google reported an average win rate of over 65% across its core evaluation metrics compared to the previous baseline. Notably, the new model achieved a 69.9% win rate in large document analysis, and a 78.2% win rate in advanced web research and source discovery.

Previously, NotebookLM required users to input pre-existing documents to get started. The upgraded version reverses this friction, allowing users to initiate research with loose ideas, open-ended questions, or prompts.

The AI can now actively assist in building a source repository from scratch, utilizing Google Search to find high-quality, relevant web sources and primary documents across multiple languages. Google emphasized that users retain full control over which sources are added, and all citations remain clearly attributed.

Furthermore, the platform has expanded its output capabilities beyond simple text summaries. Users can now generate, edit, and download a wide variety of professional formats directly from a new studio panel, including:

Google is positioning the revamped NotebookLM as a versatile tool for distinct professional workflows. Researchers can use it to run analysis code and create visual reports; technical professionals can distill complex documentation into slides or roadmaps; and small business owners can leverage the spreadsheet functionality to analyze marketing data for financial decisions.

The new features are currently available to users with Google AI Ultra subscriptions and specific Workspace business accounts.
