As the battle for browser supremacy shifts from speed to artificial intelligence (AI), Google is doubling down on Gemini integration. On Tuesday, the tech giant announced the rollout of Skills, a new Chrome desktop feature designed to transform repetitive AI interactions into one-click shortcuts.
The update comes at a crucial moment for the browser ecosystem. While Chrome maintains a dominant global market share, it faces a fresh wave of AI-native competition from startups and established players including OpenAI’s Atlas, Perplexity’s Comet, and The Browser Company’s Dia.
The goal of Skills is to cement Chrome not just as a window to the web, but as a customizable command center powered by its proprietary Gemini AI.
At its core, Skills allows users to save and reuse complex AI prompts that would otherwise require manual typing or tedious copy-pasting. By clicking the Ask Gemini sparkle icon or typing a forward slash ( / ) in the Chrome sidebar, users can trigger specific workflows across any active webpage.
The utility spans various categories, from productivity to personal wellness.
For example, a user who frequently researches nutrition can create a Vegan Substitute Skill to automatically scan recipe pages for plant-based alternatives. Other early adopters have utilized the feature to calculate protein macros, summarize lengthy YouTube transcripts, or evaluate job listings against their specific resumes.
To lower the barrier to entry, Google is launching a Skills Library containing over 50 pre-programmed presets. These range from the practical, such as budgeting tools and shopping price comparisons, to the whimsical, such as a bot that dramatizes webpage content into a movie-trailer script. Users can adopt these presets as-is or customize the underlying prompts to better suit their individual needs.
The feature leverages Google’s tiered AI models, allowing users to choose between the Pro variant for complex reasoning and Fast models for quicker, though occasionally less precise, results. Despite the increased speed of execution, Google has maintained its existing safety protocols. Any Skill that involves sensitive actions, such as sending an email or adding an event to a calendar, will still require explicit user confirmation before proceeding.
For Google, Skills represents more than just a convenience feature; it is a strategic move to keep users anchored within the Gemini ecosystem. By syncing saved Skills across devices via Google accounts, the company ensures that a user’s personalized AI toolkit follows them wherever they browse.
The rollout begins today for Chrome desktop users. Currently, the feature is limited to users with their browser language set to English. While the feature is enabled by default, Google noted that users who prefer a traditional browsing experience can simply leave the Gemini sidebar closed, keeping the AI capabilities tucked away until needed.
