Is the world ready for Grokipedia?
Elon Musk, xAI’s billionaire founder, thinks so.
This week, he unveiled Grokipedia, a crowdsourced online encyclopedia positioned as an alternative to Wikipedia amid ongoing conservative criticism of the established platform’s alleged political bias.
The entrepreneur, who also runs Tesla Inc., SpaceX and other enterprises, announced the launch on social media, vowing Grokipedia.com will deliver “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” The site went live with 885,279 articles, a fraction of Wikipedia’s more than 7 million English-language entries.
Musk first announced plans for the encyclopedia in September through his artificial intelligence (AI) company xAI, following repeated attacks on Wikipedia for what he characterized as “propaganda.” Musk previously urged users to stop donating to the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia.
The mechanics behind Grokipedia’s article creation remain unclear. While Wikipedia relies on volunteer writers and editors, reports suggest Grokipedia is powered by xAI’s technology that also supports Musk’s Grok chatbot. Some articles appear to be adapted from Wikipedia itself. The minimalist Grokipedia site currently features little beyond a search bar, allowing users to query topics ranging from Taylor Swift to Buckingham Palace.
The Wikimedia Foundation said Tuesday it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works,” and acknowledged the irony that “even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.” Wikipedia has served as a crucial training source for AI chatbots, including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini because of its vast collection of well-constructed, freely accessible text.
Wikipedia requires volunteer editors to cite nearly every claim with primary sources, and unverified content can be challenged and removed through its transparent oversight process.
The launch comes as Wikipedia faces intensifying scrutiny from conservatives. Republican lawmakers launched an investigation in August into alleged “manipulation efforts” in Wikipedia’s editing process, claiming they could inject bias into both the platform and AI systems trained on it.
Grokipedia’s own entry on Wikipedia alleges the site harbors “systemic ideological biases — particularly a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.”
The Wikimedia Foundation defended its platform Tuesday, emphasizing “transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement,” adding that Wikipedia is “written to inform billions of readers without promoting a particular point of view.”
