OpenAI is developing an internal alternative to GitHub, a move that could strain its increasingly competitive relationship with major investor Microsoft Corp.
The project, as first reported by The Information, is in its early stages and months away. Industry experts noted it potentially marks a significant shift in strategy for the ChatGPT creator as it seeks to expand from an artificial intelligence (AI) provider to a full-stack infrastructure power player. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that the decision was precipitated by recent, frequent service disruptions on GitHub that hindered OpenAI’s own engineering workflows.
The development puts OpenAI in the unusual position of building a rival to a core product owned by its primary benefactor. Microsoft, which holds a massive stake in OpenAI with more than $13 billion in investments, has integrated OpenAI’s models into its own GitHub Copilot. However, OpenAI’s new repository intends to go beyond “AI that suggests code” to “AI that does work,” The Information reported.
By owning the repository, OpenAI can optimize agent-driven development. Unlike legacy platforms where AI is bolted on, a native OpenAI system would allow AI agents to operate in isolated sandbox environments, manage dependencies and execute code autonomously, directly propose and merge pull requests with high-level traceability, and enforce security guardrails from within the version control system.
While the new coding platform is in its early stages and likely months away from release, it represents a bold gamble. Moving enterprises away from GitHub’s established ecosystem of security certifications and CI/CD pipelines will be a monumental task. However, for a company valued near a trillion dollars, the goal is clear: Control the environment where the next generation of software is built.
“Code hosting built for human developers is structurally mismatched to agentic workflows. When AI agents plan, commit, review, and deploy continuously, the platform they operate on becomes the control plane for software delivery. Every major AI platform will eventually contest that position,” said Mitch Ashley, vice president and practice lead, Software Cycle Engineering, at The Futurum Group.
“GitHub holds the incumbent advantage and the greatest exposure,” he added. “Microsoft has the resources to architect an observability-native, agentic code platform before a competitor forces it. Whether they move before the market decides for them is the real question.”
OpenAI’s initiative comes amid a whirlwind of financial activity and controversy for the AI giant. OpenAI recently closed a massive $110 billion funding round backed by NVIDIA Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and SoftBank that propelled its valuation to a staggering $840 billion.
The capital injection arrives at a critical time. Internal projections suggest OpenAI could face a burn rate of $14 billion as it chases Artificial General Intelligence, leading to some analyst fears of a mid-2026 bankruptcy if profitability isn’t realized. Selling a proprietary code-hosting service to its enterprise customer base represents a vital new revenue stream to offset these massive compute and research costs.
The technical expansion coincides with a period of intense public scrutiny. OpenAI faces a viral “Cancel ChatGPT” movement, which saw app uninstalls surge by 295%.
The backlash followed reports of a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense for surveillance and autonomous weapons technology — a deal CEO Sam Altman later described as “opportunistic and sloppy” while promising amendments to address privacy concerns.
